Therapy for the LGBTQI+ Community in Andover

LGBTQIA+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual and more. While individuals with these sexual orientations and gender identities are gaining more acceptance and rights in society, they still continue to face unique challenges, especially with their mental health.

With therapy tailored to the needs of members within the LGBTQI+ community, these individuals can get the support they need to face and overcome challenges.

Understanding Common Challenges for the LGBTQI+ Community

Children, youth and adults within the LGBTQI+ community often experience various challenges because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Even though they’ve fought for and gained rights such as the right to marry in all U.S. states, they still continue to face discrimination both in person and online. Whether within the school, community or workplace, being mocked or verbally abused can be extremely hurtful.

Others could deal with rejection from friends and family who don’t understand their sexual orientation or gender identity. When they come out to their loved ones, they could be faced with anger or be completely shunned because of their identity. They could also face health disparities. Even within the health care field, LGBTQI+ individuals deal with discrimination, impacting their ability to receive the medical and mental health care services they need.

Abuse is also common within the LGBTQI+ community. Whether it’s bullying or sexual violence, it can lead to physical and emotional trauma that’s difficult to deal with.

Mental Health Challenges the LGBTQI+ Community Faces

While anyone can struggle with their mental health, people within the LGBTQI+ community are at a higher risk because of their unique challenges. Within the LGBTQI+ community, over 39% of people reported having a mental illness.

Prejudice, discrimination and rejection can cause negative emotions. These factors can make it more likely that these individuals will struggle with mental illnesses like anxiety and depression, which can impact their daily life and relationships with others.

Some may turn to drugs or alcohol to deal with their emotions. This factor is why addiction is also common within the LGBTQI+ community. People may find it difficult to care for and manage their mental health, especially if they don’t have access to LGBTQI+ therapy designed to support their unique needs.

Compared to non-LGBTQI+ individuals, they are also more likely to feel suicidal — and attempt suicide. In fact, almost half of all LGBTQI+ adults in the Mental Health America study reported that they considered suicide. This is in stark comparison to the 4% of adults within the overall U.S. population who considered suicide.
